Alone In the Universe (Bonus Track Version) by Jeff Lynne's ELO on Apple Music

EDITORS’ NOTES

Fourteen years after the last album to bear its name, Electric Light Orchestra reemerge. Well, sort of. Jeff Lynne—founding and sole remaining member—moves front and center with a self-written, produced, and performed (“except the shaker and the tambourine”) set. Thrillingly, clean ELO DNA courses through its veins. Lynne remains a melodic alchemist at 67; “One Step at a Time” harks back to the glorious ‘70s space jams, “All My Life”’s gorgeous lovelorn chorus earns its mushiness, and the title track crystalizes the album’s fusion of thoughtful introspection and Lynne’s unshakable, mad-scientist ambition.

About Jeff Lynne's ELO

Formerly known as Electric Light Orchestra -- an influential pop/rock group who took their cues from the Beatles -- their name was eventually changed to Jeff Lynne's ELO, primarily to differentiate from tribute acts and offshoots that were touring under similar names. Since their formation in the '70s, the group underwent multiple line-up changes, with members staying with the band for varying amounts of time; drummer Bev Bevan, for example, played alongside Lynne for a number of years before leaving, eventually forming his own iteration of the band: Electric Light Orchestra, Part II.

The name of Jeff Lynne's ELO was coined in 2014 for a performance in Hyde Park, but was retained for releases and tours in the following years. In 2015, they released a studio album, Alone in the Universe -- the debut record to feature their new name on the cover -- which consisted of their first original material since 2001's Zoom. With fresh songs at their disposal, the band went on tour, including dates in America, festival appearances, and a U.K. show at Wembley that was recorded for their 2017 live album Wembley or Bust. ~ Liam Martin
