iTunes Review

It took a broken marriage for Patty Griffin to seriously consider a life as a professional singer/songwriter, and it's in the dark moments of the soul that her strongest, most affecting work has sprung. Better known by other performers' covers of her songs—sung by Emmylou Harris, The Dixie Chicks, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, among others—Griffin has no problem delivering her own goods. Impossible Dream is the Boston-based artist's fourth solo album, and it contains some of her most devastating songs to date. "Useless Desires" works off reflective disappointment, where the lonely woman in question shuttles herself to work by train and self-meditates with pills that "help me not to wonder how I ended up like this." "Florida" follows two young women trying to escape their dead-end lives, only to settle in a resort area where everyone leaves at the end of the summer season. In these moments, Griffin finds empathy and a beauty that sparkles as her voice takes the desperate situations and make them seem heroic—if only for a few fleeting minutes of pleasure.

Customer Reviews

Patty Griffin is the greatest living songwriter.

This album is a masterpiece. If you're a fan of singer/songwriter folk-country, then you can't get better than Ms. Griffin. Listen to 'Useless Desires', 'The Kite Song', 'Top of the World', and 'When It Don't Come Easy' if you need proof of how magical this album is. Or better yet, do yourself a favor and just buy the entire album, then listen to it from start to finish. The melodies are gorgeous and the word are poetry. This album captures everything that's frustrating, maddening, heartbreaking and redeeming about the human experience. Not just to be listened to, this album is to be felt, and deeply.

Love it

Found this through stumbling upon Cold as it Gets on Pandora. After hearing it the second time I wondered why I hadn't bought it yet. So I bought the whole album and it was worth every penny. Great songs, wonderfoul voice, beautiful music.

Wonderfully written music. Beautifully performed. No better writer of songs today. Also check out Moon Song.

A singer and songwriter whose literate, impressionistic storytelling and richly evocative melodies have made her one of the best-respected artists in the contemporary folk community, Patty Griffin was born in Old Town, Maine on March 16, 1964. The youngest of seven children, Griffin was 16 years old when she bought her first guitar for $50. While Griffin learned to play, she showed no interest in making music a career in her teens and twenties; however, when her marriage broke up in 1992, Griffin,...
