Album Review

By the time this two-CD, 40-track anthology hit the stores in 2004, consumers had a wide choice of Johnny Mathis compilations that contained his biggest hits in variable surroundings, ranging from succinct single-disc collections to box sets. This one does have all of the major late-'50s/early-'60s hits you'd expect of anything with "essential" in its title, although — in an effort to make this a career-spanning selection — the entirety of disc two is devoted to his post-1970 work, when Mathis was a run-of-the-mill adult contemporary singer (albeit one who did return briefly to the top of the charts in 1978 via his duet with Deniece Williams, "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late"). Still, disc one does have a lot of Mathis' best songs, and some of the most popular make-out music of all time.

The Essential Johnny Mathis

This album is every song anyone would ever want by this incrediable singer. It is not to be missed. Every toan, every note takes the listener to a time when music was worth listening to!

Musical Aphrodisiac

Fifty years ago, we needed to "soften up" our dates as the midnight hour approached. Music was the aphrodisiac we used (along with strategic red lighting). In descending order of effectiveness were (3) Sam "The Man" Taylor (the "Blue Mist" series of albums), (2) The Lettermen (although they tended to make us guys throw up if too much drinking had been involved) and (1) the hands-down, all-time winner, bar none, Johnny Mathis. This album has all the good ones and more. My wife still sighs every time she hears them. And I still maintain an impish smile.

It's wonderful

So many of the other reviewers said what I feel so eloquently. Every song on this album brings back a memory. Mr. Mathis, more than almost all other artists, can cause me to weep with pleasure. It was with gratitude that I paid the $16.99. It will bring me great joy for a very long time. Buy it. You truly will not regret it.

One of the last and most popular in a long line of traditional male vocalists who emerged before the rock-dominated 1960s, Johnny Mathis concentrated on romantic readings of jazz and pop standards for the ever-shrinking adult contemporary audience of the '60s and '70s. Though he debuted with a flurry of singles chart activity, Mathis later made it big in the album market, where a dozen of his LPs hit gold or platinum and over 60 made the charts. While he originally concentrated on theme-oriented...
