Album Review

A smooth, often delightful album that kept Lou Rawls squarely in the love/romantic/mellow circle that he'd been scoring in throughout the late '70s. Gamble and Huff were really trimming the productions and keeping things laid-back and casual, while Rawls' emphatic, smoky vocals carried the day. They weren't getting huge pop hits, but were on the R&B charts steadily, and the album just missed the pop Top 40.

Bobby Bee on the 'When You Hear Lou'....lp

I beg to differ on the Itunes opinion. Maybe because it was Gamble & Huff-inspired but in my era this was one of Lou's better outings- if not THE best one in the '70's. I've covered a few including "Lady Love @ a birthday party for my 2nd mom Rose Cannady.
No , When You Hear Lou, you've truly heard it all when it comes to Jazzy Baritone...

YOU'VE HEARD IT ALL

JEEZZEE, WHAT A COLLECTION THAT SPEAKS VOLUMNS FOR THE TITLE. THIS ALBUM HAS STAYED WITH ME AS ONE OF THE VERY BEST.IF SOMEONE WAS TO SAY...."PICK YOUR FAVORITE CUT ON THIS ONE... WELL I MIGHT AS WELL JUST THROW A DART AT THE PLAYLIST. FOR DECADES NOW, I HAVE BEEN ALMOST HAUNTED WITH THE MESSAGE DELIVERED BY "ONE LIFE TO LIVE", AND "IF I COULD I WOULDA,SHOULDA"....THE LATE PRODUCER OF MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, "CHET FORTE" ONCE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS HIS FAVORITE OF ALL TIME.....

From gospel and early R&B to soul and jazz to blues and straight-up pop, Lou Rawls was a consummate master of African-American vocal music whose versatility helped him adapt to the changing musical times over and over again while always remaining unmistakably himself. Blessed with a four-octave vocal range, Rawls' smooth, classy elegance — sort of a cross between Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole — permeated nearly everything he sang, yet the fire of his early gospel days was never too...
