EDITORS’ NOTES

Mothers couldn’t be more suited to the indie music mecca of Athens, Georgia. Their off-kilter first album is an ideal mixture of quirk and gravitas, with Kristine Leschper’s hypnotic warble elevating the beautiful finger-picked arrangements of sweet daybreak serenades like “Too Small For Eyes.” But they dip into heavier vibes on tunes like “Copper Mines” and “Lockjaw,” which crank up the overdriven guitars amid the sway and swirl. Moments like these add up to a debut that’s touching, mournful, vibrant, and completely captivating.

So good

crazayfinguz,

I never write iTunes reviews. This album is totally powerful and vulnerable, and worthy of a full listen. In this album I sense elements of art-rock, twee, math-rock, and a hint of emo coming into the mix. Everything blends together so tightly, and there’s not a moment on this I don’t enjoy. Kristine Leschper’s vocals are sweet and commanding, and paired with her lyrics they’re unforgettable. What really sets this record apart for me though is the cohesion of the group—each instrument complements the others in a way I can’t describe well, but just absolutely love. So yeah, check the album out! Pay for it! Support music, yeah!

Amazing

Xzalor,

This is literally everything that I have been looking for in indie music. Lockjaw and Copper Mines are my most favorite songs, however the entire album is great.

Best listened to driving around with the windows down on a nice windy day.

About Mothers

Originally the solo project of singer/songwriter Kristine Leschper, Mothers embrace an intimate, atmospheric style of folk-influenced indie rock. Emerging in Athens, Georgia in 2013 while Leschper was studying printmaking at the city's Lamar Dodd School of Art, the singer's vulnerable, Angel Olsen-reminiscent delivery quickly gained attention at local performances. Guitarist Drew Kirby, bassist Patrick Morales, and drummer Matthew Anderegg were eventually absorbed into the official lineup. After touring in support of fellow Athenians Of Montreal, the band's brittle, melancholy debut LP, When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired, arrived on Grand Jury and Wichita Recordings in early 2016. Produced by Drew Vandenberg (Widespread Panic, Futurebirds), the album featured guest spots by Josh McKay of Deerhunter and McKendrick Bearden of Grand Vapids. ~ Marcy Donelson
