Editors’ Notes

More than a decade after she last released new recordings, Jackie DeShannon returns with this acoustic collection of reworked hits and classics. Her voice has weathered gracefully, imparting wisdom to lyrics that once felt so free and easy. With little more than a few guitars, bass, and the occasional drum track, DeShannon breathes new life into her 1965 hit “What the World Needs Now Is Love” (penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David) and Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche’s “Needles and Pins,” which was written for Jackie and was a hit for The Searchers. Her own compositions, “When You Walk Into the Room” and “Bette Davis Eyes” (the latter written with Donna Weiss and a hit for Kim Carnes), evoke a mature singer/songwriter finding the lasting appeal of her best material. She takes the songs back from others, proving her ownership of “Come and Stay With Me,” “Breakaway,” and “Bad Water.” The new track, “Will You Stay in My Life,” holds its own as a song that still conveys the hopeful yet slightly blue vocal approach that made her name back in the ‘60s.

Beautiful Music

Thank you Jackie DeShannon! Great music brought back in a new light!

Nice idea…..

I like the music, but just can't get past the fret squeaks.

Intimate Jackie

Listening to this album is like inviting Jackie DeShannon into your living room to play a private concert. The new arrangements work very well, and all the songs are classics. This is the most intimate you've ever heard Jackie sound since her live blues shows with Ry Cooder in the 60s. And "Will You Stay In My Life" deserves to be a contemporary hit.

Singer and songwriter Jackie DeShannon has quite a musical legacy. Her early singles crafted doo wop to intelligent lyrics. She toured with the Beatles in 1964 and more than held her own. She wrote songs with Randy Newman and Jimmy Page. She sang with Van Morrison. She was among the first artists to realize that folk and pop could work together and was a behind-the-scenes innovator in the creation of folk-rock. And she did it all with style and grace, singing with a sexy, husky voice full of energetic...
