iTunes Editors’ Notes

The segue from stage to studio is often awkward—especially for singers hoping to cover up their musical theater roots. But as the title of his second solo album suggests, Matthew Morrison is proud of his past. And why shouldn’t he be? Before starring on Glee, he was a Broadway hopeful; he made headlines with his Link Larkin role in the production of John Waters' Hairspray (shortly after debuting in the musical version of Footloose). Morrison opens Where It All Began with one of the most household names of show tunes, “Singin' in the Rain.” Aside from his pitch-perfect timbre, he adds his own stylistic vocal flourishes. And he can effortlessly traverse from the '20s to the '70s—check out his funky rendition of “Ease on Down the Road” from The Wiz. Still, Morrison knows his strengths, and he mostly sticks to them throughout Where It All Began. As best exemplified in his peppy takes on “The Lady Is a Tramp” and “Luck Be a Lady,” Morrison’s voice fits loungy tunes like a well-tailored suit.

Customer Reviews

Weak vocals. Rehashed arrangements. Lifeless. Sounds like a Contractual Obligation burn-off. Sad.

The show required its cast to sing and dance, two skills Morrison had sharpened during his time as a stage actor. A California native, he began performing in school plays and theater camp productions before relocating to New York, where he enrolled at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts....
