iTunes Review

Dinosaur Jr. were slowly but surely becoming the J. Mascis project. Bassist Lou Barlow was busy with Sebadoh and drummer Murph would leave after this, the band’s fifth studio album. Mascis, a student of classic rock with a slacker’s approach to reality, emulates his ‘70s guitar heroes — Neil Young, in particular — and then sings as if he’d rather be somewhere else or as if experiencing a painful surgery sans anesthesia. For example, “Out There” kicks things off in brilliant fashion: Mascis’ thick guitar stirrings flow alongside his tortured vocals that sound like a man battling a hernia. “Start Choppin” became the hit on the U.S. “Modern Rock Tracks” chart with its limber chord changes and mock falsettos. “What Else Is New?” begins with a bluesy guitar solo that sounds as if the band spent the night in an airport bar and soaked up the local flavor. “Not the Same” begins with gentle guitar-picking and a mock falsetto that emulates Neil Young insisting “A Man Needs A Maid.” “Get Me” is an alternative band in the ‘90s performing the blues with Mascis as the King of the Suburban Living Room Blues Singers.

Customer Reviews

A seminal album from my youth.

I first heard about this album when I was 15, I'm 30 now, from some random dude at the beach one night in Cape Cod. I bought the album and it was all I talked about for at least a year. Listening to it now brings back nostalgia that runs deep. I can't effectively review this album because it is very personal to me, but I do recomend it to anyone who likes good music.

I wore this CD out

I've been listening to this album on a weekley basis since it's release way back when. Never gets old, the opening track, "Out There" hits like an elephant and the album never really lets up from there.

This Album Changed My Life!!!!

I didn't know anything about Dinosaur Jr. until J's brother married into my family. Around that i time i heard about this album and it changed everything about my musical taste. Start Choppin' has some of the best alternative guitar licks I have ever heard. If you're a fan of alt-rock with a huge classic rock feel, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple...
