Whiskey & Lace by Krystal Keith on Apple Music

EDITORS’ NOTES

Krystal Keith does her family name proud by mixing sassy attitude and sentimental charm. The 28-year-old daughter of country star Toby Keith benefits from her father’s input as coproducer (with Mark Wright) and songwriter while staking out her own musical territory. She comes across as both tough and tender here, displaying genuine grit on the upbeat tunes and a disarming vulnerability on the ballads. She brings a sweet tone to backroads party anthems like “Doin’ It” and “Get Your Redneck On” that tempers the lyrics' ornery bite with a mellow edge. She does well with working-class story-songs like “Can’t Buy You Money” (a wry look at a hard-pressed family) and the title track (a decidedly unglamorous portrait of a stripper) and knocks the ball out of the park with the heart-tugging “Daddy Dance with Me” (a tribute to her father recorded on her wedding day). “Him and This Tattoo” and “Down into Muddy Water” are potent Southern rock numbers that give her room to strut and swagger. Keith asserts herself with confidence here, making a bid for Nashville success on the strength of her own formidable talents.
