Album Review

Alison Moyet had over a decade of international success behind her, first with Vince Clarke in Yaz and then solo, and her Singles set served as a timely retrospective upon its 1995 release. The selection of tracks is balanced evenly and arranged chronologically (save for the inclusion of the unreleased cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" that kicks things off), opening with three Yaz cuts, including the classic "Only You" and the dramatic "Winter Kills." Numbering among the highlights of this strong compilation are the gorgeous blue-eyed soul of "Invisible" (her biggest U.S. hit), the buoyant "Is This Love?," and the aching "This House." Singles deftly mixes originals and covers (Moyet's canny take on Jules Shear's "Whispering Your Name" is another standout), and the four unreleased tracks will delight fans. With most of her hits present, this serves as a definitive and nearly flawless gathering of the best of Moyet's classy catalog.

Chronology of a Voice

Alison Moyet has been belting out soulful and masterful vocals since the early 80s (here represented with Tracks 2-4 & an updated track 19 that replaces synth & slow tempo with acoustic guitar & a breakneck rhythm - though you shouldn't limit yourself to these, her 2 Yaz albums are worth their weight in gold). After an attempt at US pop (Tracks 5-7, infectious tunes in their own right), she recorded a lot of introspective music that explored the flirtations of sexuality ("Ordinary Girl" & "Whispering Your Name") and self-discovery (the haunting "This House"). Whatever the lyric though, her voice is a powerhouse that emblazons every melody with a passion seldom scene in the pop world.

The Ultimate Alf

By all means you must start here if you're new to Alison "Alf" Moyet's music. Her brief stint with Yaz (Yazoo) in the early 80s to her soulful solo releases thereafter, are all captured here. All the hits including Only You,All Cried Out,Invisible,Weak In The Presence Of Beauty and Whispering Your Name appear on this glorious cd. A career retrospective from one of Britain's most gifted female vocalists.

askagaydad LOVES it

Wow, how could you make it out of the 80's without Alf? She defined my existence for years, she got me through my terrible 20's and I still rely on her to get me thru the hard times. Her voice is magic, soul, sex, and God. By all means buy this cd. "Is this Love" is my favorite track. I was surfing youtube, thus my name, when I saw the video for "is this love" and had to get the song which I only have/had on LP. Thanks iTunes for having this WONDERFUL lady and her music.
