iTunes Editors’ Notes

The third time is the charm for Shaun Groves on 2005’s White Flag. After two promising albums, the Texas-born Christian singer/songwriter makes a distinct leap forward on this release, blending a folk sensibility with elements of Brit-pop and hard rock. More significantly, he shows greater focus in his writing, creatively drawing upon Scripture for his themes. Groves has a playful side, expressed in the slightly punkish “What’s Wrong With This World” and the mock-macho “Crave.” He also reveals himself to be an unabashed idealist, as “Peace Has Broken Out” makes clear. The music shifts in tone and emphasis, veering from the somber, piano-based “Sad Song” to the uplifting “Only.” Groves’ shows an uncommon reach as a lyricist as well, balancing tales of desperation (“Heaven Hang On”) with expressions of forgiveness (“My Enemy”) and pure faith (“Narrow”). White Flag walks the line between the mainstream Christian popcraft of Bebo Norman and the more probing work of Derek Webb. The result promises even better things from this talented artist in the future.

Shaun still rocks

Shaun Groves has shown quite a bit of diversity in his three releases, and White Flag is no exception. Groves's debut was aggressive and heartfelt, but also slowed down at parts. Twilight still showed some rock flavor, but was much more mellow. With White Flag, Groves mixes the two efforts beautifully as he has tracks from every area in the spectrum. The result is a strong third effort that is sure to make some noise.

Groves' Thrid Release a Masterpiece

Shaun Groves delivers a concept album of sorts for his third release. The songs of White Flag were written around the content of the Beatitudes, a section of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Groves attempts to convey the message of this sermon which instructs its hearers on "moving from mere belief to discipleship" as Groves says. He begins with "Blessed are the poor in spirit" (reflected in "What's Wrong With This World") and moves all the way through "Blessed are you who are persecuted" (reflected in "Narrow"). Lyrically speaking, Shaun has masterfully woven the words of these songs in a way that is poetic, thoughtful, introspective, and worshipful, all the while communicating the ideas of the Sermon on the Mount. Musically speaking, there is a wide range of beautifully written music on this album. From modern rock sounding songs like "Crave" and "Only" to almost retro sounding ballads like "My Enemy", Shaun has created a masterpiece. Over all, two thumbs way up. If you like soft rock in a variety of flavors, or if you simply crave intelligent and though provoking lyrics, this album is a must have.
