Album Review

Before the title puts visions of Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles in potential listeners heads, think instead of the starkness of Neil Young's Tonight's the Night, possibly mixed with a little of the home-recording lo-fi of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. Lay Your Head on the Soft Rock is a solo recording by Chris Wicky of Switzerland's emo-punks Favez, much more along the lines of the confessional, largely acoustic material on their first two albums than their noisier, rock-oriented later work. If anything, however, it's even more stripped down than Favez's quiet takes on Dashboard Confessional-style emo, with many songs featuring just Wicky and his guitar, with a hint of distant electric organ the only musical coloration. Luckily, these are likely the strongest songs of Wicky's career, with an emotional directness that's balanced by the simple, folk-like strength of his melodies.
