Cackalack is haunting, truthful, effortless, open-hearted

Wow. I have always admired Jonathan Byrd's writing, ever since I first heard him in an old (now closed) roadhouse in Orange County, NY. Being a native North Carolinian (Cackalackian) in New York, it's like a welcome taste of home, worts and all, glazed in a warm, sweet, slightly spicy barbecue sauce. The acoustic sounds, superior picking, and Jonathan's voice, more beautiful and evocative than I have ever heard it, took me back to the rough, prickly, beautiful, haunting places and people of my youth. This album reminds why my favorite music to listen to is this sweet spot he's found - the perfect nexus of country and folk. If you think you're too high and mighty to appreciate this kind of music, just take a listen - check your foot. It'll be tappin.

Jonathan Byrd is one of the best songwriters you may not have heard of, but you should definitely get to know. He is the real deal and the songs that flow out of him are a testament to his authenticity. The music speaks for itself, he is who he of the best around. This may be his best work to date.

Great Stuff!

I can't stop listening to this one! Picked it up in late November 2010 when JB was at the Purple Onion in Saluda, NC and I have played it over and over and over again. My Ipod is loaded with everything from Sinatra to James Taylor to SRV, but the Cackalack, Law and the Lonesome, and The Waitress CDs always seem to get the most plays by far!!!
