Editors’ Notes

The Palm Desert, CA, stoner rock unit's major-label debut came out in 1994. Immediately praised by critics for its combination of Sabbath-slow heaviness and dynamism and strong psychedelic elements, Sky Valley featured four tracks (now broken into eleven) intended to be listened to as a single piece (or two pieces for people with the vinyl edition). Alternating between a combination of crushing '70s metal with grunge aesthetics and spaced-out acoustic forays, Sky Valley lives up to the promises of '90s stoner rock, delivering faintly recognized riffs, melodic hooks and singable choruses without sacrificing any of the traits that put the music on the fringes of the mainstream. In addition to an almost constant sonic debt owed (or homage paid) to the Melvins, the humming wall of distortion that singer/guitarist Josh Homme would bring to Queens of the Stone Age's first album can be identified especially in opener "Gardenia," "Demon Cleaner" and "Odyssey" and fans of that band will certainly want to hear what Homme was up to before QOTSA. A year after Sky Valley's release, Kyuss broke up following the appearance of … And The Circus Leaves Town.

WELCOME ALL...to Sky Valley

Finally available on ITUNES! This one will take you down and spin your head 'round. The ultimate statement by the band that didn't give a **** about radio play. Upon its release, this album only had four tracks (1.Gardena/Asteroid/Supa Scoopa; 2. 100 Degrees/Space/Cadet/Demon Cleaner; 3. Odyssey/Conan/N.O./Whitewater; & 4. Lick Doo. When I first heard it I likened it to Pink Floyd's ANIMALS with the depth of the tracks, even though the songs were separate as written (unlike ANIMALS), they way the songs were combined into three main tracks allowed you to enjoy them at a completely different level. You had to commit to the trip. Here they are in a new format, much more approachable. I approve - great to help new fans come to learn how epic this band is. Bottom line, it still sounds the same if played all the way through. Highly reccomended. I often trip on how most people have never heard of KYUSS - considering how great a band they were, and how their music is so much better than anything else produced in the 90's - and part of the reason has to be this release, which pretty much cemented their obscurity. The opposite of selling out.

My Favorite Album. Ever.

Thank you iTunes for adding Sky Valley. This album deserves 100 stars, not just 5. Crank it up extra loud, and you will be blown away by it. Gardenia on it is EPIC. Listen to the album as a WHOLE too. On the CD release there are only 3 tracks: 1) Gardenia/Asteroid/Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop 2)100 Degrees/Space Cadet/Demon Cleaner 3)Odyssey/Conan Troutman/N.O./Whitewater. It's like that to encourage you to listen to the whole album. And really, do. The CD booklet says "listen without distraction", too. This is the only CD i have listened to in my car for a LONG time. And i still love it. This seriously my favorite album, I love almost every track. You get dropped straight into the fire with Gardenia, and and it one helluva ride. Really, folks, do yourself a favor-buy, and experience this masterpiece. It doesn't get any better. 100/5

My favorite Kyuss album

I was disappointed to see the tracks separated for the iTunes release. The original CD had songs 1-3, 4-6, and 7-10 lumped together into 3 really long tracks. It wasn't a very efficient way to listen to music but it forced you to take it all in rather than listen in bursts. But regardless of track orientation, each song is good enough to stand on its own. This is one of those few albums greater than the sum of its parts. Every song is equally enjoyable and there's no filler which makes for one surprisingly good package, unless you count the last track, Lick Doo, which I don't.

Biography

Formed: 1990 in Palm Desert, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Hailing from Palm Desert, CA, Kyuss (pronounced "kai-uss") has become something like a heavy metal equivalent to the Velvet Underground. Although they are widely acknowledged as pioneers of the booming stoner rock scene of the 1990s, the band enjoyed little commercial success during their brief existence, but their combination of sludgy, down-tuned guitars (often played through a bass amp for maximum, earth-shaking intensity), spacey jams, galloping...
