Editors’ Notes

Like R&B wunderkind Frank Ocean and fellow Toronto native Drake, vocalist and songwriter The Weeknd earned a fanbase on the strength of his mixtape releases: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. With Trilogy, The Weeknd wraps them together and sprinkles in three new studio tracks, including “Twenty Eight”—filled with suggestive come-ons, heartbreak, and atmospheric synths. If his smooth yet urgent vocals (which sometimes soar into the falsetto sphere) sound familiar, it may be because he starred on Drake’s 2011 hit “Crew Love.” This is dark, modern R&B music that creates a hypnotic vibe greater than the sum of its parts.
