What started life as unlikely political metaphor and beloved children’s tale, L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz became one of Hollywood’s greatest film musical landmarks in 1939, a cultural touchstone that’s spawned a virtually non-stop series of revivals and adaptations ever since, including the 1975 soul romp The Wiz and even a rock-based ‘70s Australian road picture. But Godspell/Pippin composer Stephen Schwartz’s 21st century Broadway musical version comes courtesy of a slightly more obtuse take on Baum’s story: novelist Gregory Maguire’s 1995 revisionist prequel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Schwartz’s shrewd formula of fusing traditional Broadway with MOR pop-rock gives Tony-winner Kristen Chenoweth (in the beefed-up role of Glinda) several star turns, while co-stars Idina Menzel (as the misunderstood title character) and Wizard Joel Grey light up “The Wizard and I” and “A Sentimental Man,” respectively. Its unabashed contemporary Disney sensibilities may rankle traditionalists, but it’s precisely that tone that helped it become such a crowd-pleasing success.
My Favorite Broadway Show for a Reason!
"Wicked" was definitely my favorite Broadway show of all time. Its music was utterly magical and amazingly well written and performed. Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth are such amazing singers and actresses, and so are the others in Wicked. They all make this soundtrack worth the money. Basically every song here is memorable - and there are a few which stand out above the rest as classics in Broadway history. 1. Tells the story of how Elphaba was born. It is a pretty good song, but a better beginning. 2. An ode to Elphaba and Glinda's school, Shiz. Pretty good, actually. Not the best song on the album, but it's good. 3. With an introduction from Madame Morrible and the rest of the song by Elphaba, this song is very good. Menzel's vocals really spice up the track. 4. Really, really funny. Basically the reason to listen to the song, it still is extremely catchy. 5. A dark, ominous track which is actually one of the better songs on the album. Maybe the goat sounds aren't that thrilling, but they are part of the story. 6. One of the best songs on the album. Fiyero's second verse is awesome - I love how this song is not that much like a showtune and more like a popular rock song. It also has a good message (just don't follow it!) 7. If you're going to know any song from Wicked, this will be it. The most popular (haha) song from the show is not one of the best, but pretty good nonetheless. Pretty funny. It is also sung only by Glinda (Chenoweth), with very little from Menzel. 8. Good lyrics. 9. "One short day in the Emerald City"...the chorus alone will be stuck in your head for days. 10. Short, but pretty good. The Wizard of Oz (Joel Gray) is a good singer - he does quite well on this song. 11. BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM. This song you will also probably know even if you haven't seen Wicked. One of my favorite songs of all time, "Defying Gravity" features perfect vocals from both Menzel and Chenoweth - especially Menzel at the "So if you care to find me..." part of the song when in the show she's lifted up into the air. Magical, beautiful, best song on the album. Enough said. If you don't want the whole album, buy this song and you'll be happy. 12. Act II! After "Defying Gravity", it's hard to make a follow-up. It's pretty good, mostly at the beginning. After the beginning, you'll probably press the next-song button. It's still a good song, however. 13. After the long orchestral beginning, Joel Gray comes back in for another song. It's not as good as "A Sentimental Man", but it's pretty good. Very showtune-like. 14. We've heard this before, only now it's Glinda singing. Very good, while short. It leads directly into the next song in a very good way. 15. Amazingly magical love song. It's cheesy, but after those first few instrumental seconds, you won't be able to change the song. Beautiful - it will become another one of your favorites. 16. Second best song on the album. Extremely well performed song from Elphaba. The "One question haunts and hurts..." verse is the best part of the song. The whole song has a great message, mostly in that verse. Magically wicked. 17. Worst song on the album. It's not really that bad, but it's pretty stupid, especially Baq (Tinman's) verse. His extremely fake "Elphaba...the WITCH!" scream ruins the song. 18. Another one of the best songs on the album. Ties for second-best with "No Good Deed". I never cry during shows, but this one will definitely make you as it did to me. Beautiful duet with both Elphaba and Glinda. PERFECT way to end the album. Such a good song - *sob* 19. You didn't hear this in the show because you were too busy sobbing after "For Good". Nothing special, really, just closes up the show. Overall, this album is highly suggested. With so many amazing, magical, beautiful songs on here, it's hard to resist. With some of the best Broadway singers singing together on one album, you're probably scrolling your mouse up to the "BUY ALBUM" button. Don't let any other review stop you. You will NOT be dissapointed by this album. PERFECTION.
WICKED is one of Broadway's big new "revival" shows - the musicals that are helping to bring the masses of American back to the flashy, famous street. With incredible lead actresses, starring Idina Menzel as misunderstood Elphaba, infamously renamed the Wicked Witch of the West (she won a Tony for her portrayal) and Kristen Chenoweth as the shallow, self-absorbed Glinda. The show is an amazing, emotional two hours that contains strong story-telling, stirring music and vocals, and dazzling sets and costumes. And, aside from visiting the show on Broadway or snatching conveted tickets to one of the tour dates, this soundtrack is the best way to experience the mind-blowing story of the prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Both actresses are SPOT ON, with soaring vocals and infused emotion into their songs. Album highlights are: *No One Mourns the Wicked, as expansive opening song that stuns the audience, and gives Kristen a chance to show us what amazing range she has... *The Wizard and I, a heart-warming ballad that Idina belts...shows the giddiness and naivity of her character... *What Is This Feeling? is a funny, funny song about...LOATHING! to see this song live, and to watch two actresses interact in this song is hilarious. *Popular, one of the soundtracks most "popular" tracks, it's a funny little bit of shallow, cheerleader-esque help...once again, live, this song is a RIOT! *Defying Gravity, is the show-stopping song that ends Act I and makes everyone in the crowd shiver with its raw emtion and heart-shaking music...Idina belts this power ballad like no other, and the last minute of the songs is simply breath-taking... *For Good, a beautiful song about friendship...Kristen and Idina complement each other beautiful here, as their voices soar and dip into an amazing last song This album is DEFINATLEY one to have, even for those that arn't big musical lovers (Wicked was actually the first musical I ever really listened to...and loved). A rousing, emtional story about being an outsider, and working to be accepted, loved, and appreciated. Wicked also shows that their is no true good and bad, and that more grey areas appear throughout life, making us question life and our meaning in it. THIS SOUNDTRACK WILL DEEPLY TOUCH YOU...AND THE LIVE MUSICAL IS UNFORGETTABLE!
Wicked is Wickedly good!
I absolutely LOVE Wicked. The music is phenomenal and the musical is outstanding. I listen to the music on a regular basis and it never gets old. Idina Menzel's voice is truly amazing and Kristin Chenoweth is hillarious! I love every song but my favorites are Defying Gravity, No Good Deed, What is this Feeling?, Popular, and For Good. This is the best 10 dollars I have spent on iTunes. The lyrics are powerful and very catchy. Buy this soundtrack and you won't be dissapointed. Tracks in order are: 1) opening, explains how Elphaba was born and Oz's reaction to her death 2) Elphaba and G(a)linda's school song 3) Elphaba expresses her feelings about getting the chance to meet the Wizard 4) Elphie and Glinda are roomies, and they hate each other 5) Dr. Dillamond (a goat) is loosing his voice and is banned from teaching 6) Fiyero, the scandalous prince arrives at Shiz and gives his outlook on life and invites the students to a dance 7) After the dance, Glinda tries to make Elphaba more popular (this is the start of their friendship) 8) Elphaba (who has a crush on Fiyero) realizes that he will never love her 9) Elphaba and Glinda spend a day in the Emerald City before they see the wizard 10) The Wizard, explains how he always longed to be a father, therefore becoming the "father" of Oz 11) Elphaba decides that she must follow her heart even if it means leaving Glinda and being labeled the "wicked witch of the west" 12) Glinda and Fiyero's engagement party she becomes "Glinda the Good" 13) Elphaba and the Wizard confront each other again 14) Fiyero runs off w/ Elphaba and Glinda realizes he doesn't love her 15) Elphaba and Fieryo love each other but know that it can't last 16) After her sister is killed and Fiyero taken away, Elphaba tries to save him and thinks about how every good deed she has attempted to do has gone wrong and sings about all the people she has accidentally hurt 17) The people of Oz and the Tin Man go out to kill Elphaba 18) Glinda and Elphaba express their feelings as they know they will never see each other again (just before the melting) 19) closing song, Glinda has finished story and the citizens of Oz now understand what really happened
