Album Review

Widespread Panic are carving a niche for themelves in the rock arena that separates them from the crowd. Subtle, intelligent rock that blends numerous elements into a smooth, propulsive blend of structure and improvisation — rock with energy, talent and brains. These guys may have influences, but they're no one's clone.

Rock Solid

The album and production is very subdued, and actually hides how good this album and these songs really are. Think of this album as the written screenplay to a great movie. These songs come alive in full color in concert. Barstools will punch you in the gut. Rock will make you get your groove on. Love Tractor will have you yelling yeee-haw at the top of your lungs even if you're not a redneck. Proving Ground is a song that is so good that it blows your mind a different way with each replay. The Van Morrison tune Send Your Mind is the only song I don't care for on Mom's Kitchen.

A classic!

This is classic WSP. This was the album which moved them onto the national stage and proved that they were serious musicians. Likely the best sophomore release of any band in 20 years. Buy the album...go to a show.

One of the many neo-hippie jam bands inheriting the road-warrior mantle left behind by the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic established a devout grassroots following on the strength of constant touring and a loose, rootsy brand of Southern rock informed by jazz and blues textures. The group's origins date to 1982, when vocalist John Bell and guitarist Mike Houser first began playing together while attending college in Athens, Georgia. When bassist Dave Schools left academia to join the duo the next...
