Very Romantic and Dark

Tristania's "Widow's Weeds" is their best album next to "Beyond The Veil". It's so captivating and sends you to another world...a world of dreams, of sorrow, of emotion., or memories. The whole album in general has a very gothic and romantically despairing sound to it, and the language sounds like you're reading from a medieval poetry book or Edgar Allen Poe. The album starts off with the very atmospheric "Preludium" which sets the stage for the album...rain and church bells, already distinguishing the gothic sound. Evenfall is very romantic and emotional, the lyrics spoken in eloquent old English style...talking of love and sadness. Another stand out track is December Elegy, which is so sad that it actually made me cry. It's also very atmospheric and romantic. The best track on here is Angellore, which is a bit different from the other tracks in tone and sound, but it carries so much emotion and nostalgia, romanticism, and a unique sense of child like innocence. My Lost Lenore is also a standout track. It reflects the work of Edgar Allen Poe tastefully and it is very haunting and chilling. Vibeke is phenomenol in this track. Another thing I need to make note of is Pete Johansen's violing playing, which is extremely incredible and sets the tone, affecting the songs in a drasticly amazing way. Buy this album. It's a must have for Tristania or gothic metal fans.

Regarded as one of the world's premiere goth metal bands, Norway's Tristania have earned their reputation through risk-taking creativity, unquestionable talent, and perhaps more than anything else, an impressive consistency from release to release. First coming together in 1996, Tristania took the uncommon step of showcasing three separate vocalists of wildly divergent styles to represent their lyrics, these being operatic soprano Vibeke Stene, clean-singing counter-tenor Østen Bergøy, and harsh,...
