EDITORS’ NOTES

Adapted from a rock musical that the band mounted in Portland in 2016, Blitzen Trapper’s ninth album portrays the saga of two young lovers in a dystopian America. Though the storyline is fragmentary, the characters’ feelings of hope and desperation are readily discernible thanks to Eric Earley’s vivid writing and his band’s ever-adventurous take on heartland rock. An unabashedly Dylan-esque tale of revenge, “Joanna” is especially rich, but it’s the “Born to Run”-sized title track that really makes good on the band’s grand ambitions.
