Editors’ Notes

Movie directors learned early that Van Morrison songs sound terrific in a variety of situations and are often among moviegoers’ favorite songs on a film’s soundtrack. That Martin Scorsese has had great success with Van’s music is endorsement enough to send other directors looking for a golden moment. The songs on this collection range from Morrison’s early work with the Belfast R&B band Them, with “Baby Please Don’t Go” and Morrison’s rock ‘n’ roll classic “Gloria,” through to such reflective later work as “Days Like This” and “So Quiet in Here.” Morrison’s take on Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” is a fascinating novelty as he puts his trademark phrasing into lines like “There is no pain, you are receding.” Live versions of “Domino,” “Moondance,” and “Into the Mystic” and longtime favorites such as “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Jackie Wilson Said,” and “Have I Told You Lately?” make this an album with something for everyone who’s ever been intrigued by the moody bard.

Customer Reviews

I grew up listening to this and keep loving it.

Not the original release of Brown Eyed Girl or Wild Night; I'm not sure when/where these were cut, but they're not the originals. They're not bad versions, just be warned before purchasing. Others may not be the originals, either, but I don't recall off ear. The first two, with Them, seem to be the original releases.

That said, I didn't buy this album for that song, but for several other tracks that are hard to find. Morrison never disappoints, and I enjoy this album very much. 3 stars for not correctly noting Brown Eyed Girl or Wild Night as non-original releases. 3 stars still, instead of 1 because Van Morrison always delivers.

Baby please don't go/ Them

Doesn't get any better than the guitar riffs in the song. Close your eyes and fly away!!!

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected...
