iTunes Review

With the departure of guitarist Captain Sensible, The Damned was down to the original core of drummer Rat Scabies and singer Dave Vanian. Keyboardist Roman Jugg, who'd joined up casually on the previous album (1982's Strawberries) provided much of the band's sound. Producer Jon Kelly adds sound effects that give the songs a filmic quality. With its dramatic piano, "Sanctum Sanctorum" sounds like it's from a horror movie. "Streets of Dreams" shows Scabies as a powerful instrumental force, while bassist Bryn Merrick adds melodic punch to tunes like "The Shadow of Love" and "There'll Come a Day." But the sense of The Damned being a band is secondary to the power of the album itself, which is among its best. Punk had come and gone, and in its place here is something nearly gothic. (Nick Cave's future wife Susie Bick is on the cover at her most haunting.) The expanded edition adds remixes, plus the single "Eloise" (a hit for Barry Ryan in 1968), other session outtakes, and live cuts, including a cover of The Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant."

With punk's history having entered a new millennium, the impact of the band initially judged "the least likely to" seems to grow ever more each day. The Ramones hold deserved pride of place for kick-starting the whole thing, while the Sex Pistols -- and to a lesser extent, the Clash -- helped take it to an even more notorious level, serving as role models for many young bands to this day. But arguably just as important and memorable were the Damned, London contemporaries of the Pistols and Clash...
