Album Review

This marriage of four players with impressive pedigrees proved to be the success story of 1982 when Asia's debut lodged itself at the top of the U.S. album charts for two months. The album spawned a massive number four single in "Heat of the Moment," a follow-up Top 20 hit in the sweeping "Only Time Will Tell," and a handful of other tracks that received heavy radio play despite going against the grain of the new wave styling of the day. Produced by Mike Stone, Asia's strengths were the powerful vocals of John Wetton, the nimble, classically tinged guitar work of Steve Howe, Geoffrey Downes' majestic keyboard playing, and anchoring the band, Carl Palmer's propulsive drumming. The lyrics are overwrought at moments, but there's no denying the epic grandeur of the music, which provided some much-needed muscle to radio at the time, and did so with style.

Two Good Songs?

What a shame! So many people who didn't give the rest of this album a listen. Almost every track on this album has something to offer. Give "Without You" or "Here Comes the Feeling" a try. Great precision and timing. Powerful rock with great melodies. A classic album.

Only 2 Good Songs?

Bassist from King Crimson. Drummer from Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Guitarist from Yes... not modern rocker Trevor Rabin, whom I do like, but Steve Howe, who can play anything with strings attached. Lastly, Asia has Geoff Downes, Yes' fourth keyboardsman, who is not Rick Wakeman (Strawbs), Patrick Moraz (Moody Blues) or Tony Kaye (the original Yes keyboard man). All three of those musicians had more instrumental talent, but not Geoff's skills at writing songs. Standing out from Yes, EL & P and King Crimson, the lineup of Whetton, Downes, Howe and Palmer is not capable of issuing an album with only two good songs.

Way more than two good songs

This is one album that I can listen all the way through without skipping! Don't just buy Heat of the Moment and Only time will tell, try the whole album. I would highly recommend it to anybody who likes to rock.

When they appeared in the early '80s, Asia seemed to be a holdover from the '70s, when supergroups and self-important progressive rockers reigned supreme. Featuring members of such seminal art rock bands as King Crimson (John Wetton), Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Carl Palmer), and Yes (Steve Howe), as well as Geoff Downes from the Buggles, Asia did feature stretches of indulgent instrumentals on their records. However, they also could be surprisingly poppy, and that is what brought them to the top of...
