Welcomed second recording

It's striking how different the opening is of this recording of Williams Cello Concerto from Williams recording with Yo-Yo Ma. The discrepancy is really limited to the opening and a few articulated passages. It's a strong performance from deMaine,Slatkin and the DSO who continue their mission to record all the Williams concertos, a noble task!

Tour-de-Force for deMaine, a stratospheric artist

As an associate of the esteemed composer of this work (dare I call myself a colleague?) I find this recording so satisfying on several levels: 1) it is live, basically accomplished in one take with a brief patch; 2) the revisions improve the piece dramatically and should remain as is; 3) Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony sound absolutely top-shelf in their support of the soloist (who incidentally won the principal cello position in the LA Philharmonic the following week - a feat nothing short of black magic). While certain refinements in the earlier Ma recording do exist, let's not forget that it was a studio endeavor and not a live performance, unlike deMaine's, which has plenty of poetry, nuance, nobility, and fire under the circumstances. All forces are firing on all cylinders here, particularly deMaine, whose sensitivity and blazing virtuosity emerge beautifully and immaculately in front of an audience of 2,000. Five stars, highly recommended, a must-add to all cello-buffs' collections.
