The eye-popping 1971 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features a tour de force performance by Gene Wilder as chief candymaker—and mischief-stoker—Willy Wonka. He adds warmth to the ballad “Pure Imagination” and injects “The Wondrous Boat Ride” with just enough malice to make it a hallway of horrors. The Greek chorus of Oompa Loompas rebuke the bratty candy-factory guests with their morose morality-play melodies, which sound particularly delicious when Julie Dawn Cole’s ever-sneering Veruca Salt is officially deemed a “bad egg.”
