Album Review

With her fourth studio album, Freedom, Melissa Ferrick kicks and tears at the constraints her chosen life as a musician have set upon her. Being a tormented artist is apparently not that easy, neither internally nor externally. It obviously wreaks havoc on the inner emotional realm to have a need to create and to live by those creations. Having avoided the pitfalls of egocentricity thus far in her songwriting, Ferrick falls into that void a little on this effort, which is forgivable in the grand evolutionary scheme of an artist as talented as this one. Includes "Some Kinda Nerve," "Little Love," "Win 'Em Over," and "Drive."

timeless soul

In a time where the women have dissapeared from the face of rock and soul, Melissa brings back an attitude of raw spirit and true ownership on this album. Lyrically and melodically, this is an outstanding journey through her mind.

long time fan

I have been a fan of melissa's since 1995.. and this is one of my favorites!

FREEDOM is the soundtrack of my life……

I saw Melissa live for the first time in 2000 just as this album came out. I fell in love with the honesty in her music and the raw guitar. I have bought several copies of this cd, as I have always kept it close at hand and listened to it as the soundtrack of my life for 12 years now. I listen to it at least once everyday, and on a rent trip in Colorado, I was driving for 10 hours one day and it was the only thing listened to. I have turned on several new Ferrick Fans, and I hope to introduce more to this amazing individual. I have listened to many of her albums but THIS is BY FAR my all time favorite.

The songs speak to me- The Stranger tells the story of a recent journey in my life. Little Love could be said to tell the same story. Drive is the anthem of us all…. the lyrics are moving and wrought with meaning. It is hard to listen to any song on this album and not recall some moment in your own life. Melissa has a way with words that is akin to Shakespeare- they say so much with so little sometimes. The emotion is so vivid in the lyrics and her voice. You can feel what she is singing.
I could not get through my hectic days without this album… If you are a Ferrick Fan, you must add this one to your collection. If you are new to Melissa's work- this is the one you need to introduce yourself to as you begin your journey. Other albums are great, but this one is SPECTACULAR!

Singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick emerged in 1994 as part of a group of new female alternative singer/songwriters, much in the vein of Liz Phair. Raised in Ipswich, MA, she began singing in coffeehouses after dropping out of college and eventually wound up in Boston. Her major breakthrough arrived one night when she replaced Morrissey's opening act less than an hour before showtime. Ferrick's performance impressed Morrissey, who invited her to open for him during the rest of the tour. The tour earned...
