10 Songs, 35 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Joe Pug’s third album features a fuller sound and is his most accomplished yet. His fingerpicked guitar and vulnerable vocals are backed by piano, upright bass, harmonica, mellotron, pedal steel, and drums. But the album's essence is its focus on resilience, as he channels emotional turmoil into lyrics that are instructive and optimistic. Pug has a poetic gift for finding solace in hard times without getting mired in moodiness. Lines such as “every dying ember, every setting sun, could not cast a shadow, on the race we have run,” from “The Measure,” reveal that glimmers of hope and redemption are always at hand for those brave enough to look for them.

I want to love it.

I think Joe is an amazing talent and many people will love this album. For me, it reaffirms what a great poet and storyteller is is, but the album as a whole is just a little sleepy. It needs a track or two more in the vein of “Nation of Heat” to balance out all that mellowness.

We love you Joe

If you don't know Joe but think maybe you should, trust that voice and drop a few bucks in support of one of the best singer songwriters in the game today. You won't regret it.

Our Pug love is a family affair, with our 3 year old leading the way. We first heard Joe when he opened for the Lumineers at Merriweather Post a few summers ago. His sound is both familiar and unique, full of warmth, truth, and heart.

Can't wait to dive into this new album and to see Joe at the 930 Club in DC this Spring.
