Editors’ Notes

Never discount the intuitive synergy that exists between twin sisters. Here, Claudia and Alejandra Deheza sing in harmony, unison, and counterpoint until the songs melt in their presence. Their bandmate Ben Curtis had quit Secret Machines to explore this unusual chemistry and form a trio; this second album, 2010’s Disconnect from Desire, was a major step forward. Where their debut album, Alpinisms, was a great bedroom-closet recording where the songs held together through sheer will and meditative vibes, Disconnect demands a broader stage. Its rhythms are harder. Its melodies are more challenging and more amenable toward the pop music that many independent and underground artists carefully toy with. “Heart Is Strange” sounds like a dance-floor and radio fave, with its ebullient waves of melody siding up to the precise beats. “Dust Devil” turns up the dance steps. “Babelonia” twists things down the dark end of the street with ghostly vocals and the feeling that the band’s shoegazer origins hadn't completely dissipated in their newfound heaviness beyond the strobe lights.

Customer Reviews

Superb!

This album is a work of art, gorgeous to listen to, just transports you out of this world. School of Seven Bells really set themselves apart with their clear, otherworldly vocals, and trance-inducing instrumentals. It's really a unique experience to listen to their music. Something I'd listen to flying on an airplane, riding my bike at sunset, looking up at the stars...I LOVE it. <3

They debuted in 2007 on Sonic Cathedral with the 7" recording My Cabal, which featured a remix on the B-side from Robin Guthrie -- Guthrie's Cocteau Twins, as well as several of the artists the Cocteaus inspired, from My Bloody Valentine to Medicine, as well as Curve, being apparent touchstones....
