Album Review

Sticking to traditional Christmas songs, mandolinist David Grisman and his impressive string group, plus a few guests (including recorder players on two brief songs and banjoist Bela Fleck), alternate swinging renditions of familiar melodies with ballads. Highlights include "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "Winter Wonderland."

Great Holiday Music

What a great album!! This is my favorite Christmas album of all time. It has great arrangements of classic Christmas songs with wonderful mandolin, banjo, fiddle and acoustic guitar playing. It has been part of our family's Christmas soundtrack for years now.

Long Lost Favorite

I think I had a bootleg of a bootleg of a bootleg of this thing in the early 90s. I played the tape unitl it wore out. I'm so happy to find this again! Very nice, acoustic holiday music.

Swingin' & Pickin' in a Holidaze

The two factors that make this my hands down favorite album for the season is the beauty of great string players in synch on all these numbers even as they transition from traditional arrangements to swinging jazz or bluesy-grass; and the absence of vocals. As mentioned in the album review there are at least three wonderful toe-tapping highlights. But what makes this entire collection thoroughly enjoyable, is that without words, the old classics take on new meaning for me. Without the lyrics, Grisman's arrangements let you appreciate the beauty of the melodies as he plays with each one and has a little fun along the way.

David Grisman is normally associated with the bluegrass wing of country music, but his music owes almost as much to jazz as it does to traditional American folk influences. Because he couldn't think of what to call his unique, highly intricate, harmonically advanced hybrid of acoustic bluegrass, folk, and jazz without leaning toward one idiom or another, he offhandedly decided to call it "dawg music" -- a name which, curiously enough, has stuck. A brilliant mandolinist, with roots deep in the Quintet...
