edgy, dark, beautiful

Covenant has a hard task as artists in that they have created some of the best electronic records of the past two decades. They have painted themselves into a corner in some ways. And yet, they are a band that continues to evolve successfully, unlike contemporaries such as Apoptygma Berzerk, and producing high quality output more consistently than VNV Nation. I put Modern Ruin above Skyshaper; it's more coherent and the experimentation drives the music and doesn't detract from it. Yes, it sounds different from other releases, but the same could be said of any previous release. At the end of the day, it was worth the wait. There is a great deal of depth and beauty. The sound is here and now and does make you want to move. It's got an edge that Skyshaper didn't have. It's more easily comparable to Europa, yet with the emotional driving chorus of 20Hz (think Judge of My Domain). For fans who accept the evolution and grow with Eskil and the boys, it is a gift, not to be dismissed or passed over.

Decent, but feels a bit incomplete

What's impressive about "Modern Ruin" is it's exploration of many different electro-industrial styles within it's 11 tracks. Make no mistake, there are some outstanding songs here (Lightbringer, Judge Of My Domain)...but something about the package as a whole just leaves me wanting. Maybe it's the fact that there's only 9 songs (Modern Ruin and Kairos are just bridges), or maybe I was hoping for a sound closer to Covenant's earlier stuff. The inclusion of the "Wir sind die Nacht" single helps, but I think the core album could have benefited from one or two more solid songs. When all is said and done though, "Modern Ruin" is still worth a purchase.

Sadly Surprised.

I was very excited when I found out this was finally released. Regretfully it just does not live up to a lot of what has come before. It has a couple of ok tracks, but by and large it is a lot of noise. I have to give Covenant some credit for trying to branch out and explore a few different styles, but even the better tracks on this album don't have that hook found in a lot of their prior works, and what is Kairos?
Give me Brave New Worlds, Call the Ships to Port, evolve, expand, but listen to what you are releasing and try to make sure The Beauty And The Grace isn't the strongest track on the album.
