iTunes Review

Paul Simon’s eldest son, Harper, takes after his old man (Paul co-wrote three of the album’s ten tracks), singing in the same forlorn tone and embracing a classic folk-rock sound throughout this self-titled debut album. Country influences poke out on the Simon & Simon penned “Tennessee,” while “Shooting Star” and “All I Have Are Memories” channel Nashville through the Sweetheart of the Rodeo days of the Byrds. Elsewhere, Simon puts forth his challenging acoustic guitar playing on the Petra Haden, Paul and Harper Simon-composed “Ha Ha,” and his family gift for frolic on the feelin’ groovy vibe of “Cactus Flower Rag.” An expert band of seasoned studio pros from harmonica man Charlie McCoy, singer Inara George, guitarist Al Perkins, and legendary producer Bob Johnston create solid, never sterile, backings. At times the resemblance is spooky. “All I Have Are Memories,” the Carrie Fisher, Paul and Harper-composed “The Shine,” and “Berkeley Girl” contain the proof of talent and ability being genetically transferred from one generation to the next.

Wow Harper. I think some people here are selling you kinda short

yes ok there is providence in your voice and harmonies. But i get way more influences outta this than simply picking the low hanging fruit. I hear Jayhawks. I hear the twang of Son Volt. But I also hear the atmospherics of Ivy or Kings of Convenience. I hear layered harmonies recalling Fountains of Wayne and the story telling of the Kinks. I hear a person who enjoys and is also influenced by lots of different types of music but well rooted in americana. Yes your immediate influence very present in "Ha Ha." That one is a straight up next door neightbor living right next to the house that the "Paul Simon" s/t album built. There is more than a bit of Duncan in there. That is what you have probably heard all your life. BUT I also hear a person who is at heart a music fan and is truly enjoying finding his own voice. Good luck to you. Great Album

Honest Opinion on a Potentially Brilliant Album

When you listen to Harper Simon, you wonder, "Why does he sound so familiar?" The boy with the guitar with the sweet tender melodies. Brings me back to the sixties, where musicians spoke with feelinga and crafted brilliant poetic songs... oh wait a minute... that's right, the boy sounds like "Paul Simon."

The album flows well. The harmony and lyrics go hand in hand. I'm sorry Harper, but you sound very similar to your father back in the days of Simon and Garfunkel. Pre Graceland. Regardless, it is a solid good album that is perfect for a Sunday morning in bed. Imagine yourself, sipping on a cup of coffee and reading a good book. Your lying in bed and the air is cold and brisk. The sun is beaming down on you and Harper Simon is in the background singing to you. That's what this album makes me feel.

Favorite songs: The Shine (slightly twangy, yet great duet with a female), The Audit and Wishes and Stars. Overall, I give the album 4 out of 5. Yes, I am a sucker for Country-Alt music

Harper Simon

Sounds a like a combo of his dad and Artie -- and that's cool with me. Thoughtful lyrics and nice tunes. He's good. Give him a chance.

The son of Paul Simon and Peggy Harper, Harper Simon made his musical debut at age four by singing "Bingo" in an episode of Sesame Street.
