A Few Gems in a Gravel Pit

Hit and miss is the perfect way to describe Ducktails’ Landscapes. Some of his tracks have a lot of heart and evoke visions of childhood memories and nostalgia through genuinely unique sounds that are unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. Case in point: On the Boardwalk, Landrunner and Deck Observatory. Most of the other tracks are forgettable, muddy, borderline bad jam sessions that serve as a reminder that you need to go back to the other worthwhile tracks. Not awful but not that great either. Piece-mealing this album might be in your best interest. Favorite track: On the Boardwalk

Ducktails is the solo side project of Matthew Mondanile, a member of Ridgewood, New Jersey-based indie beach bums Real Estate. While not too dissimilar in tone from the sun-kissed pop of his main squeeze, Mondanile's work as Ducktails presents a more fragmented, mercurial version of the Garden State of mind.
