Editors’ Notes

Not since the Cocteau Twins’ 1993 limited edition Snow EP have holiday hymns sounded so heavenly. A dreamy cover of Phil Spector’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” opens with Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo’s breathy vocal harmonies falling like snowflakes from gossamer layers of blissed-out guitar fuzz, distorted synthesizer ambiance, heartbeat rhythms and of course sleigh bells. Their own “Come On Santa” is a coquettish carol that lures with music box chimes, jangly guitars and Foo’s flirty vox upfront on the harmonies. The playful “Christmas Ghosts” waltzes with a haunting and faraway feel thanks to an overdose of reverb, a childlike glockenspiel, more sleigh bells and what sounds like a vintage guitar playing tremoloed leads. “Christmas In Reading, England” could've been the title for “Christmas In Cleveland” since the spectral song swirls with the same kinds of wonderfully over-processed guitar leads, heavy-lidded harmonies and mellow drum loops that middleclass British art-school bands like Ride, Slowdive and Chapterhouse were birthing in the early ‘90s. The perfect EP for your favorite shoegazer or demure indie enthusiast.

Like freshly fallen snow

Not your traditional Christmas song styles, and this is refreshing. I like the 50's or 60's-ish rock sound to some of these, but not done in a heavy way. I hope they produce more Christmas music. Well done, Raveonettes!

Christmas Candy

The best Christmas present yet, even though I had to pay for it. This will make the holidays perfect this year. Sit around an open fire with this in the background all huddled up in my winter jacket, it's a wonderful thought. If you like the Raveonettes or if you like music at all, get this.

Best of recent EP string

Some of these songs are beautiful in that classic Raveonettes way. Over the last few months, they've dropped a few EP's and this one feels the most complete.

Formed: 1998 in Copenhagen, Denmark

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Combining the noisy swells of the Jesus and Mary Chain with melodic elements of '50s rock & roll, the Raveonettes formed in Copenhagen during 2001. Guitarist Sune Rose Wagner had tried assembling a band for several years, traveling between New York City, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and an island outside of Seattle in his search for like-minded musicians. A longtime fan of Bob Dylan, he also prized the songwriting of Buddy Holly, the harmonies of the Everly Brothers, and the guitar work of Mark Knopfler,...
