Album Review

A superbly arranged, produced, and mastered session from a wonderful vocalist. Wilson's singing, delivery, and tone are enticing and sensual throughout, even when the songs threaten to get overly sentimental or just sappy. Although the album was aimed at the adult contemporary audience, Wilson never coasted through any number, and this was about as polished and effective as this kind of session could get.

Partial Yes, But Still Shines....

The late Johnny Mercer wrote poems and had unfinished songs on the shelf when he passed away, his widow offered the unfinished works to Barry Manilow, who scored the poems and lyric and recorded "2:00 A.M. Paradise Cafe" as a result of this collaboration. In 1991 Barry, with the same theme, composed music for this collaboration with Nancy Wilson, this album featured soft bossa nova rhythm arrangements as opposed to "Paradise Cafe" which was saloon style. Nancy did a moving cover of "When October Goes" which is unfortunately missing here, and "The Last Dream Home" had moderate radio play as did "I Can't Teach My Old Heart New Tricks" and Barry would "cover" "I Can't Teach My Old Heart New Tricks" for his boxed set in 1992. Tracks one and two are crossfaded to have a more "suite" feel and gives this whole project a nice cohesion. The mastering is a mindblower and Nancy's vocals are superb. Barry rescued Nancy from an overproducing Japanese "clearinghouse" and phonetic background singers and put her where she belonged, with superb accoustic arrangements with downplayed electric instruments and synth overdubs.

Perfection!

This is an incredible album.

Incredible music!

When I heard the story of the lyrics and music coming together, I had to have it!! I saw Barry Manilow on a talk show many years ago and he told the story. Nancy Wilson has done an incredible job with these songs. Her voice is phenominal.
