Reseña de álbum

The fourth full-length album from singer/songwriter Matt Wertz, 2008's Under Summer Sun features more of the laid-back, heartfelt, adult alternative pop the Missouri native is known for. Oddly, just under half of the songs included here are carry-over tracks from Wertz' 2007 effort Everything in Between. In that sense, Under Summer Sun comes off as more of a relaunch for Wertz rather than a fully realized album unto itself. That said, tracks like "Everything's Right," "5:19," and "Carolina" do evince a kind of rootsy, soul-inflected folk-rock not dissimilar to artists like John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and others. Similarly, such mid-album moments like the slow ballad "I Will Not Take My Love Away" and the rousing and bluesy "Keep Faith" find Wertz revisiting his Christian-rock base and should please longtime fans. And despite its misguided electronica intro, the power pop infused "With You, Tonight" is a fittingly uplifting rocker that pleasantly brings to mind the Goo Goo Dolls. However, it's the blissed-out, '70s-centric midtempo title track "Summer Sun" that really grounds the album and brings to mind a perfect mix of Hall & Oates blue-eyed soul and America soft rock. Also, as it comes near the end of the album, if you glossed over the first half it just might be good enough to get you to spend a little more time under the sun.

I like it, I love it, I want some more-... Well, maybe a little different?

I was kind of expecting atleast newer productions of the older stuff. Just seems like maybe they re-mixed some of it. Matt Wertz is AMAZING, no doubt. And if you haven't heard him before, he did a great job of picking out his best hits of the previous two albums to put on this one. I like the 3 new songs. They are great. But if you have the previous albums, I would just buy the 3 new songs. As far as the bonus tracks... I was pretty surprised when I heard the first "Some One Like You". It sounds like a good acoustic production! Mixed well. But then the rest of the bonus tracks seems like a crowdless live recording, with the vocals a tab bit too high. To be honest, they could have put more effort into this release. But, I'm still a fan. Still bought it. Still listening. Still love it. Bottom Line: Just Discovering Wertz? BUY THIS!

Best Qualities of a Musician and Person In One

Under Summer Sun is the best combination of where Matt has been and where he is headed. Re-recordings of "old songs" such as 5:19 and Carolina add a refined feel to already great songs while new songs like Summer Sun and Back In June exhibit his ever growing talent and passion for good song writting. If his lyrical and instrumental skills were not enough, his interactions with and dedication to his fans is second to none. He truly delivers music for the people and for music's sake, not self promotion or personal gain. I cannot think of an artist who deserves more fortune than Matt Wertz. Pick up his new album, you wont regret it, and while you are at it check out his charity the Mocha Club. Can't wait to see him in concert on October 4th.

Born and raised in Liberty, MO, near Kansas City, Matt Wertz grew up wanting to be a shoe designer, but when he started writing songs his freshman year of college, he realized that it was actually music that he wanted to pursue. Cutting his teeth at Christian youth group Young Life concerts and tour dates with Jars of Clay, Wertz independently released Somedays in 2001, followed two years later by 23 Places. In 2005 the EP Today & Tomorrow came out, and thanks to his constant touring, the singer,...
