Album Review

The Pines second album finds multi-instrumentalists Benson Ramsey and David Huckfelt continuing in the largely acoustic indie category, mournful, sometimes atmospheric — to be honest, not so different from a thousand other bands plying their trade around the world. The cover of the traditional "Careless Love" is fair, and their own "Don't Let Me Go" has its memorable moments. For the most part, however, there's very little to distinguish this, either in writing or performance

There's A Light Under the Door

Unfortunately, the iTunes reviewer skimmed over this record, summarized it in his/her abbreviated musical context and moved on to the next review. I think you have to consider what an album is attempting to do if you're going to criticize it and this record is simply a collection of beautifully understated songs tied together with honest folk lyrics and solid if not impressive musicianship. As someone who listens to a lot of roots-based music I find that this album has a very subtle and delicate strength in it that only grows brighter with each listen; It has a very versatile feel in the sense that I can play this just about anywhere and around anyone and it'll make sense. It has a mellow laid back vibe but it's not boring or sleep-inducingly stoned-it's deceptively sharp and polished. I'll admit that it didn't knock me down upon first spin, but over time it has grown on me and proven to be layered with powerful story telling, open plains imagery and just plain dirty bluesy rock. Highly recommended. Can't listen to Light Under the Door without getting choked up now.

Pretty good

It's not the best I've ever heard, but they are decent. Without a Kiss is a good song.

So sexy in the pines

If you love Cold you love this album. I know- you've never heard of these guys but start with Cold and then grab their latest album- brilliant!

Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Pines fuse the spare acoustic sound and evocative storytelling of folk music with the eclecticism and attitude of rock & roll. The Pines were formed in 2002 by vocalists, guitarists, and songwriters David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey; while both men were born and raised in Iowa, they happened to meet while they were living in Tucson, Arizona, and after discovering they were of similar minds musically, they began writing songs together. David and Benson both...
