Heckman and Alden

It's nice to hear Howard Alden playing with some SF Bay Area musicians. There is a nice, familiar repertoire of tunes with stripped down arrangements. It has the feel of an inspired straight ahead blowing session. Everyone is focused on swing and taste. Heckman plays his heart out throughout the recording; the standout track for me "Lazy Afternoon"; not only because I love the tune, but because of Heckman's soulful clarinet rendition. You can really hear the wood of the instrument.
And Alden plays some distinctive, inventive chordal solos. It's nice to hear how he works with pianist Matt Clark. Guitar and piano together in jazz end to be trouble, but they are pros and know how to compliment each other nicely.
Check it out, it is real jazz; swinging, impromptu and very easy on the ears.
