Excellent Update of a Classic

Andrew Lloyd Webber's new version of The Wizard of Oz, currently running at the London Palladium, is a wonderful update of the classic film, taking the excellent film score and adapting it for the stage for modern audiences. The new songs work very well with the existing, classic score, and the casting is excellent. Danielle Hope makes a wonderful, refreshingly different Dorothy, and Hannah Waddingham is amazing as the Wicked Witch of the West. Emily Tierney as Glinda and Michael Crawford as the Wizard are also wonderful, and the whole supporting cast performs very well. The musical arrangments blend the new tunes with the old seamlessly. This is a very enjoyable recording and an accurate reflection of the truly wonderful stage production that I was fortunate to be able to see in London.

I love wizard of oz!

A great new update for 'The Wizard of Oz'

This is based in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production currently playing in London's west end. ALW has added new songs and arrangments into the piece. For any Oz fan this would be a great addition as it fill in even more of the story.

Danielle Hope impresses as Dorothy, while her three friends don't really leave their mark on their role.
Emily Tierney as Glinda is lovely. This recording however, belongs to Ms.Waddingham as the Wicked Witch.
She is absolute perfection in this role and elevates any number she's a part of.

I feel as though they skimped on some of the songs, for example Munchkinland is usually 12 minutes and here has been reduced to six.
For those looking for the best recording of Oz I would still recommend the Original London Cast over this one; it is the most complete, the truest and the best version of the stage show put on record.

Andrew Lloyd Webber (b. 1948) is the most successful composer of musicals of his generation and also a breaker of molds for the type. His predecessors were, for the most part, American: New York-based songwriters steeped in Broadway tradition. Lloyd Webber saw his share of shows as a child, too, but he was born in London, the son of William Lloyd Webber, Director of the London College of Music, and was trained at the Royal Academy of Music, hardly the sort of place where you'd be likely to hear Oklahoma!...
