iTunes Review

On Elemental Journey, Sonny Landreth takes a side trip from his usual Deep South musical environs as he delivers a batch of modern rock instrumentals showcasing his prowess as an electric guitarist and composer. For three decades, this native Louisianan has typically applied his outstanding slide guitar abilities to tunes with a blues or Cajun flavor. This time, Landreth puts aside his penchant for writing Southern-rooted words and music in favor of letting his playing speak without a regional accent. “Gaia Tribe” (a team-up with fellow fret wizard Joe Satriani), “Passionola” (featuring Texas guitar hero Eric Johnson), and “Heavy Heart Rising” are rooted in ’70-era classic rock, grounding their instrumental flourishes in cogent and memorable melodies. The rhythmic glide and sleekness of “For You and Forever” add a hint of jazz fusion to the mix. There’s a lighthearted quality to the playing here, heard in the bubbly riffs of “Reckless Beauty” and the balmy Caribbean mood of “Forgotten Story.” Everyone from steel drum player Robert Greenidge to the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra contributes to Elemental Journey’s eclectic tracks.

Customer Reviews

Certainly not as raw as some of his earlier CDs but the sound that Sonny produces is extraordinary; the chiming of bells to the howling of a wild animal. It never fails to give me goosebumps. This CD really showcases his extraordinary skill and this time it's just his guitar doing the singing.

It's the Journey.

This album takes you on a trip; a seamless exploration of a soundscape that is uniquely home to one of the most gifted guitarists gracing this planet. Each track flows into the next almost as if the following song is an harmonic of the previous one. Each playing of the album transports the listener to a new space. This is one album to play and replay again and again. A masterpiece. Thanks Sonny.

Sonny rocks...

He is still in my opinion of the unrecognized and under appreciated guitarists and composers out there. His lyrics are clever and heartfelt, and his brilliant technique truly makes him a giant. When you get Eric Johnson and joe satriani - or is it Steve Vai?- to join up with you on an album, that's truly transcendent. We don't deserve guitar playing this exceptional. But we will surely take it!

Southwest Louisiana-based guitarist, songwriter, and singer Sonny Landreth is a musician's musician. The blues slide guitar playing found on his two Zoo Entertainment releases, Outward Bound (1992) and South of I-10 (1995) is distinctive and unlike anything else you've ever heard. His unorthodox guitar style comes from the manner in which he simultaneously plays slide and makes fingering movements on the fretboard. Landreth, who has an easygoing personality, can play it all, like any good session...
