Album Review

Wonderland By Night is a far cry from the boisterous, good-time Italian swing of Louis Prima's popular Capitol recordings. This sequel to Prima's 1960 album, Pretty Music: Prima Style, is comprised of orchestral pop instrumentals, some of which incorporate a wordless vocal chorus. Nighttime is the theme of the album, with Prima's trumpet out in front to carry the melody. Prima's copycat version of the title track competed on the charts with Bert Kaempfert's original, but Kaempfert enjoyed substantially greater success. Wonderland By Night is a fine, atmospheric album that sets an evening mood any time of the day, but is completely unlike the music for which Prima is best known.

Nice Music / Not necessarily Louis Prima

I bought this CD years ago back in 1995, loved it! I was in Las Vegas one weekend and was able to catch Sam Butera, Louis' sax man, playing in the lounge at the New York, New York casino. I asked him about this album, and quite frankly he was pissed off, not at me but at Capitol records for releasing this back in the 1960s under Louis Prima's name. He told me it was a bunch of studio musicians who came in, played the music and marketed it under Louis Prima. He said Louis was upset but because he was under contract to release a new album so Capitol just slopped this together and Louis didn't get anything out of it. The review from iTunes hits the nail on the head to say it doesn't sound like the Louis Prima everyone knows. It's not but it's still a nice listen.

A tireless showman and an underrated musical talent, Louis Prima swung his way to icon status thanks to an irresistible, infectious sound whose appeal translated across generations. Nominally a swing artist, Prima's distinctive sound also encompassed New Orleans-style jazz, boogie-woogie, jump blues, R&B, early rock & roll, and even the occasional Italian tarantella. Regardless of what form his music took, it swung hard and fast, with a rolling, up-tempo shuffle beat that helped some of his earlier...
