iTunes Review

The warm timbre of his voice remains as inviting as when he debuted in the 1960s (and made his name at the Woodstock festival where he played for over three hours), and his selection of cover material in 2008 remains eye-raising and perfectly in sync with his mission and message. At 67, Richie Havens may have earned his stripes as an elder statesman but he’s hardly a nostalgia act, still performing with the passion of someone a third his age. The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” is delivered with an ominous tone. Jackson Browne’s “Lives in the Balance” expresses its worldly concerns with simmering tension. Clarence Greenwood’s ‘Hurricane Waters” is fueled by Haven’s frustrated tone, while Haven’s originals, “The Key,” “Say It Isn’t So,” “If I,” and “We All Know Now” are beautifully complimented by a backing group who push ever so gently against the rhythms as Havens glides over the melodies with ease. He’d practically be considered “easy listening” if it weren’t for the strong social consciousness underlying his material and the passion and commitment that has never flagged over five decades of service.

Richie Triumphs Again

Richie Havens touches our souls and makes us look at our country and the world. He is a true American hero. If you have a chance to see him live DO NOT MISS IT. Until then, we have another collection of his interpretations and own compositions to make us think and inspire us. "Nobody Left to Crown" is Richie at his best. Thank you Richie.

Thank You Richie

Thank You Richie. Great music with some great messages during these trying times.

The Joy of Permanence

When I pass, I pray a woman's perfume will be found all about me, and her lipstick on my cheek ... a bit of last night's whiskey on my breath, ... guitar callouses on my fingertips so hard and deep they scratch the varnish on my casket, and Richie Havens voice buried in my ear so deep the Undertaker can not remove him. Send me to the hereafter with his blessed voice, and I will spend the time I've earned in transit with joy in my heart. Thank you Mister Havens.

Born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, Richie Havens moved to Greenwich Village in 1961 in time to get in on the folk boom then taking place. Havens had a distinctive style as a folksinger, appearing in such clubs as the Cafe Wha? His guitar set to an opening tuning, he would strum it while barring chords with his thumb, using it essentially as percussion while singing rhythmically in a gruff voice for a mesmerizing effect. Havens was signed to Douglas Records in 1965 and recorded two...
