Album Review

Haitian-born classical violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain has made a name for himself across the musical spectrum, performing with DJ Spooky, Emeline Michel, and Lady Gaga, composing work for dance companies, and, under his own banner, combining violin with electronics and programmed rhythms in a way that's no mere grafting of classical instrumentation to hip-hop à la Miri Ben-Ari, but a genuinely new sound. His beats are sparse and stuttering, and the occasional outbursts of turntable scratching are equally subtle and restrained, more in the style of DJ Krush than the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. His violin is both bowed and plucked, and subjected to various types of distortion and electronic manipulation. Some tracks erupt in bursts of outright noise. Occasionally other instruments, most notably piano, enter the mix, but there are no co-leaders and (mercifully) no vocalists; this is Roumain's show, and it's overwhelmingly a melancholy and quite beautiful one.

Dont be afraid of change....because its just another form of yourself

When I first saw this artist, I was being dragged by a girlfriend to see a show from some "violinist"...and to tell you the truth, it was nice..just nice. Even though in the begining I wasnt as excited, something about his violin stuck with me...so I invested in his music. There is not one emotion that has not gone thru me with DBR's music. Amazing how his humbleness portrays through his amazing skill with the violin when it should be the contrary! You can tell this guy respects the spirits before him but doesnt diminish the generation he is in. He mixes them both and the result is what change should feel like...inspiring and fearless. These words are what his music brings out of me...and he will bring them out of you, too. Don't wait....change is great! His music is the kind that you will be able to share years from now with your children, because that's how long it will be around.

DBR Woodbox Live

I recently had front row seats for a live presentation of DBR performing Woodbox, Beats and Balladry @ the August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh. A wonderful combination of energy, creativity and warmth. With the backup of Elan Vytal (DJ Scientific) Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) played all but two tracks from Woodbox. He showcased his technical expertise on the 6 string violin ranging from sweet, swinging passages to fast, percussive etudes for violin and turntable. Try it, you'll like it!
