EDITORS’ NOTES

There’s a sonic grandeur to Darkness Divided’s debut album that lifts its contents beyond its pervasive mood of mayhem. Anyone seeking the crushing breakdowns and harsh/clean vocal dynamics that metalcore fans crave will find them here in abundance. What this San Antonio quartet offers behind these familiar elements is outstanding lead guitar work (courtesy of Christopher Mora) and lyrics with a fresh take on Christian themes. There’s finesse as well as brutality at work here, heard in the whiplash-inducing tempo shifts of “The Will of Man” and the soundtrack-like string backdrop of “Severance.” Gerald Mora is capable of unleashing horrific howls and snarls as well as delivering song choruses with melodic grace. Christ’s redemptive sacrifice is Written in Blood's overriding focus, portrayed with desperate intensity in “The Hands That Bled,” “Remnants,” and similar tunes. “Withering Kingdom” rips into mankind’s sinful nature with raw fury, while “Divine Mercy” appeals to God amid pummeling beats and grinding riffage.

About Darkness Divided

A Christian metalcore unit based out of San Antonio, Texas, Darkness Divided specialize in punchy, groove-laden tech-metal with a message. Founded in 2010 as a worship band in the vein of Third Day and Jeremy Camp, the band transitioned to heavier fare shortly after forming, citing influences like As I Lay Dying and the Devil Wears Prada. Built around the talents of vocalist Gerard Mora, bassist Joseph Mora, guitarist Sebastian Elizondo, and drummer Hayden Allen, the band released their debut EP, Chronicles, independently in 2012. The EP caught the ear of Victory Records, which signed the band the following year and issued their first full-length outing, Written in Blood, in 2014. Tours alongside genre heavies like Colossus, For Today, and August Burns Red followed, and in 2016, the band released their eponymous sophomore studio long player again via Victory. ~ James Christopher Monger
