Album Review

A lengthy, seamless fusion of Western and non-Western electronic and acoustic elements, interspersed with soundbites and film samples, with a level of emotional engagement and compositional sophistication rare in music of this type. Uniformly enthralling.

I've been a Woobian for some time.

Woob is difficult to review for a general audience. On the surface, Woob could appear to be merely "Ambient" music - those spacey, droning sounds that last for 20 minutes and are punctuated with sound effects. But Woob is so "not" that.

Instead, Woob, to me, is a musical Audiobook. Instead of melodies, production or words that tickle (kind of like how the guitars come in on The Beatles "Paperback Writer" or how the guitars thicken in Led Zep's "Stairway to Heaven) Woob has moments that inspire a color or taste or thought. More like how listening to a song will bring up a host of memories akin to Deja vu.

Make sense? (laughs). Woob is great for Ambience but you'll find yourself picking out little audio tickles that compel listening to the whole work.

Buying a single song here isn't really a good way to understand Woob - this is definitely an Album purchase. As background noise, Woob is good. But the best Woob experience comes through listening. "Wuub" is probably the only "tune" of Woob. But don't let it be the only one you experience.

If you're like me, you'll find yourself understanding the art & talent of the often misunderstood genre of music, Ambient...but Woob is the pinnacle of the sort.

Hands down THE best ambient dub album of all time

I was lucky enough to get my hands on several copies of this album (and the 2nd more rare one) way back in the 90's. This album still knocks my socks of, never ages, and has influenced all those that came after... Words fail to decribe how amazing this album is. It should be standard required listening to anyone and everyone interesed in electronic/ambient - and certainly those watching a sunrise at dawn on the playa.

Ground breaking album.

This album, more than any other, was *the* instrumental ambient album that crossed over from pure electronic bleep-blorp into natural ambience while continuing to remain cohesive with each song having a sound and composition all its own.

Simply a gorgeous album.

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s

Woob is U.K.-based ambient-dub musician Paul Frankland, whose albums for Em:t Recordings are among the most praised and encompassing documents of post-rave ambient of the last several years. Incorporating Middle Eastern instrumentation and vocalese with Jamaican dub-style production, tight, snappy breakbeats, blankets of synth drone and melody, and heaps of treated samples and field recordings, Woob is a sort of state-of-the-art snapshot of heavily hybridized post-rave experimental ambient.
