Editors’ Notes

Brownsville Station’s third album boasts their breakout hit, “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” a prototypically swaggering piece of boogie rock that would define them in the minds of millions. While this homegrown Michigan ensemble could never compete with Grand Funk Railroad for pure Motor City muscle, they had a feeling for rock-solid rhythms and a sharp pop sensibility. “Lightnin’ Bar Blues,” “Take It or Leave It,” and “Let Your Yeah Be Yeah” are something like Detroit’s answer to Creedence Clearwater Revival. The album’s showstopper is less subtle. An outlandish hybrid of Spencer Davis Group and Black Sabbath, “Question of Temperature” is a must-hear.

This Rocks

Brownsville Station is way underated. Smoking in the Boys room is one greatests songs of all time and sums up 70 hard rock.

"Now,Teacher; Don't You Fill Me Up With Your Rules!"

.."Cause Everybody Knows That Smokin' Ain't Allowed In School!".."YEAH!" was 1973; Dude! It rocked hard; had monster riffs & was "Radio-Ready" with "Smokin' In The Boys Room!"; a sleazy-bar-band standard still played today! "Cub" Koda is to be congratulated on his encyclopedic knowledge of basic; meat-and-potatoes "Rock & Roll!" Brownsville Station put out this one Killer Covers Collection LP; wrote one "Classic Rock" tune with "Smokin" and well; they earned their niche on the Wall Of Rock! My picks: Let Your Yeah Be Yeah; Barefootin'; Love, Love, Love & Question Of Temperature! "Yeah!" (Turn It Up To 11!) Grimmbo.

Smokin' in the Boys' Room

It's amazing how stupid many iTunes reviewers are. Sorry ThreeDaysGrace4ever, but Brownsville Station did "Smokin' in the Boys' Room" 12 years before Mötley Crüe. And the original is better IMO. The other songs aren't all that great. They were pretty much one-hit wonders.

Formed: 1969 in Ann Arbor, MI

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '10s

A Detroit area rock & roll band formed in 1969 by guitarists Cub Koda and Mike Lutz, Brownsville Station's original members also included T.J. Cronley (drums) and Tony Driggins (bass), with Henry Weck replacing Cronley on drums in 1971. Initially influenced by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and other '50s rockers, their early albums included inspired covers and genre-faithful originals, all presented in Marshall stack, double bass drum bigness. Far more effective as a live act (with Koda's...
