Find your center, breathe deeply, and hold on.

Laura Veirs deftly explores the tortuous interior landscapes of the human experience and exposes the raw nerve of heroin-like desire we spend our entire adult lives compensating for. Addictively mesmerizing from the first haunting acoustic notes of Fire Snakes, the album's lead-off track, Veirs makes no apologies for the raw emotions she lays bare, yet ultimately promises to "dress up your wounds / Wash off the salt," and reminds us that, to truly be human, we must experience the entire spectrum of emotional responses that arise out of an unfathomable universe of stimuli. Sometimes painful, sometimes hopeful, and always mystical, Veirs sings with an ethereal confidence, consistently reminding the listener that, indeed, this world into which we slowly, inexorably spiral is not delineated by a shallow, narcissistic obsession. These songs are not exclusive; they are not nihilistic. Rather, each is a bright beacon from within the depths of the long forgotten, trodden-over, passed-by, and universally ignored corners of the human cosmos where secrets of a primordial past remind you that home is a place you've long forgotten about--perhaps for your entire life. Hold on. Veirs may take you there gently, but she won't let you leave.

laura veirs/ year of meteors

this was an unexpected find sourced from KCRW. yes, at first she reminds you of liz phair but that's just one the many influences in her music. the songs are slightly off beat and extremely well written. She has a completely rounded sound that to my ears is perfectly produced. has to be one of my favorites of the year. the song 'gravity is dead' is a heart stopper.

Seattle singer/songwriter Laura Veirs sings personal songs of romantic intoxication, everyday vignettes, and occasional social commentary that are often heavy on introspection and intense character scrutiny. Her vocals and melodies rapidly shift and veer, up and down her wide vocal range. She put out her own self-titled CD, recorded live and featuring just her and guitar, in 1999. Though she went to the studio for her next album, The Triumphs & Travails of Orphan Mae, it too was self-released (though...
