Album Review

This benefit album chronicles a benefit concert given by Greg Brown at Peterson Auditorium in Ishpeming, MI, in August 2005 on behalf of the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve in its efforts to oppose sulfide mining in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Brown presents several "notebook songs," i.e., songs he has written recently in a notebook and not performed before. Not surprisingly, given the forum, he makes frequent references to Michigan and to environmental concerns, among other political issues. Notably, "Oily Boys" is a topical song about the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 and what Brown sees as the media's complicity with politicians and the oil industry. Brown also includes old favorites like "Canned Goods," however, and he is joined by a second guitarist, bass player, and pedal steel guitarist to give a country flavor to his encores. There is a hilarious 12th hidden track in which a child, Kiah Leaf Staley, daughter of Yellow Dog coordinator Wendy Johnson, warms up the crowd with another comic Brown song before his appearance.

Greg Brown is my religion

I have been listening to Greg Brown since I was about 8 years old, I am now nearing 40. He is an amazing songwriter and I am always thrilled with all that he releases. I have seen him live many times and I just saw him live again at our State Fair...he was incredible. He and Bo Ramsey are magical together. Greg Brown has so much integrity....this disc was created to fund raise for a watershed project....good for you, Greg Brown. Keep up the fantastic are the best at what you do.

What a great live performer!

Just saw him last night at Humboldt State University with Bo Ramsey as an opening act. OILY BOYS brought the house down. Many cuts from this album were played and his delivery really made the songs ring true. Buy his work AND treat yourself to a live concert when he is in your neighborhood--you won't be sorry.

Critic Josh Kun once described singer and songwriter Greg Brown as "a Midwestern existentialist hobo with a quick-draw mouth, a bloodied heart, and bourbon on his breath." One of the leading contemporary folk artists of the American Midwest, Brown's music reflects a poetic spirit while also sounding thoroughly down to Earth; his deep, craggy voice expresses quirky humor and the mysteries of life and love with equal skill, and over the course of a career that's spanned more than five decades, he's...
