iTunes Review

Founded by Greek-born singer/composer/arranger Magda Giannikou (that’s her on the cover), the NYC-based Banda Magda is a pan-global outfit that usually focuses on her songs and arrangements. On their second album, however, she and her excellent band tackle mid-20th-century love songs that range from chanson (“Petite Fleur”) to Greek folk (“Yerakina”) to bossa nova (“Doralice”), while such additional elements as a string section, Northeastern Brazilian rhythms, and other deft touches give these classics a fresh coat of paint. Giannikou has a gifted musical mind, yet her breathy voice—which skillfully navigates a multitude of languages—shouldn’t be overlooked either.

Banda Magda adds a little color to your heart!

From the first time I heard their first album, I fell completely head over heels in love with Banda Magda’s music. As a fan of world music already, I couldn’t believe how they mixed things together (like Brazilian samba sung in French, for example) and how much I loved it! I had the opportunity to see Magda perform in New Orleans, and let me tell you…there is nothing like hearing this music live! As a lover of languages, I adore that this album incorporates so many of them. The languages are almost like instruments themselves. Buy this album and I promise, you will not be disappointed! My only warning: it’s the only thing you’ll want to listen to for a loooong time. :)

Banda Magda wows again!

I'm very proud to say that I backed this album on Kickstarter. Magda and her crew are unbelievably well versed in the musical stylings of so many different languages and cultures. From the time I first heard of them through Snarky Puppy and heard their first album, I was floored. And now, Yerakina solidifies their image as not just musicians of incredible skill, but of great love for the music they're playing- and it shows. Favorite tracks of mine are Sabia, Senza Paura, and Karotseris- a favorite of mine since they started playing that in live shows. An album with tremendous craft, and a band of delightful people. I highly recommend not only buying Yerakina and their debut album Amour, t'es la?, but to see Banda Magda live in concert. If you love these songs, you'll love to see what they do live. Banda Magda once more leaves me impressed, and as a musician and music lover- inspired.

great new album!

this album is -like the first- album a must for every music enthusiast, who likes good songwriting and fantastic musicianship!
