iTunes Review

With Nickel Creek broken apart, Chris Thile leads The Punch Brothers and fiddler Sara Watkins has gone solo. It's given Nickel Creek fans twice the new output to look forward to. Watkins' link to classic bluegrass is casual. "The Foothills"—the opening instrumental of her second solo album—recalls her roots. Other tunes feature acoustic-based instrumentation that continues that relationship, as a banjo rings out on "Take Up Your Spade." However, Watkins' confidence is soaring, and her choice of tunes is inspired and breaking new ground. She wrote or cowrote many of the songs, despite how familiar and classic they sound. She also threw in The Everly Brothers' "You're the One I Love" as a duet with Fiona Apple, plus Willie Nelson's "I'm a Memory" as a place for Jackson Browne to lay down his weary voice deep in the mix. Other guests include Benmont Tench (Tom Petty) and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), and the stretch into modern country, pop, and rock 'n' roll is complete.

Great Return to Music

Sara is a true talent and it seems like the more she explores her limitations and strengths the better the albums get. Her last self-titled record was good but in my opinion, a step backwards from the strength she brought to Nickel Creek. In Sun Midnight Sun she proudly steps into her own providing us with not only great music, but music thought through and carefully crafted with precision and creativity. Something that Nickel Creek ALWAYS captured. Sara should be proud because finally she is standing on her own as a true solo artist. I'm a fan of this record.

This is some awesome music!!!

Love this album!

I had never heard Sara's solo work before until I saw her in concert in April. I love Nickel Creek so I assumed I would love her solo work. I was blown away by her!! She mainly played songs off this album. When I got it yesterday, I felt like I was coming home to a friend. "You and Me" and "When it pleases you" are favorites but my new theme song is "Take Up Your Spade". This is a must for your collection!
