An Astounding New Artist

Let's face it. You can't help comparing newcomer Holly Conlan to rising star Sara Bareilles. The vocal similarities are next to unmistakable, and their music shares the same winsome piano-driven formula. And it doesn't help that the undeniably catchy "OK" bears traces (likely unintentionally) of Bareilles' smash hit single "Love Song." But regardless of whether this somewhat inevitable comparison comes to mind, or the listener is reminded of the countless other 'girls with pianos' in the music field, it can't be denied that Holly Conlan brings something astoundingly fresh and original. Her music is haunting, lyrical, beautiful, and emotionally rich. Of course, there's the irresistible draw of "OK," which practically keeps the listener glued to the repeat button for quite a while. But Conlan has so much more to offer on this excellent EP. The deep, emotional "You Are Goodbye," likely to attract Conlan a lot of attention thanks to its availability as an iTunes Discovery Download, stays with the listener long past the end of the song. The richly textured, somewhat bouncy "Happy Song" stays far away from bubblegum (as does everything on this EP), yet remains acutely charming. Conlan finds a true vocal and melodic showcase in the haunting "Winter," and probably her most well-known work from its inclusion on the show "One Tree Hill"--the beautiful "Home"--is, of course, top-notch. Holly Conlan seems to have it all...a smooth, smoky, beautiful voice, excellent piano skills, a gift for melody and thoughtful lyrics. Now all she needs is the chance to be heard. All I have to say is, let's hope a new full-length album comes quickly!

A Fine Frenzy meets Rachael Yamagata meets Sara Bareilles

And I mean that as a HUGE compliment. The EP is fantastic. Can't wait to hear more. (And no, it's not 'folk'. By my definition, if it's not strummed on a guitar, it ain't folk. This is 'alternative-indie'.)

Before becoming a major player in L.A.'s Hotel Cafe scene, singer/songwriter Holly Conlan spent her childhood writing music on the family piano. Her father was a classical composer, and Conlan grew up under his influence, mixing her own interests in pop, rock, and folk with a proper classical music education. By 2005, she'd boiled down her influences to a sprightly, piano-based pop sound, which she introduced on her self-titled debut album. The Bird EP followed in 2008, coinciding with Conlan's unofficial...
