iTunes Review

Nine Lashes explore the tension here between a series of dualities: light and darkness, sin and salvation, hard rock and electronic pop. The Birmingham, Ala., quintet finesses these contrasting elements with a skill that speaks to their maturity as a band. Riff-driven, melodically grounded groups like Linkin Park and Incubus remain the band’s key reference points, with touches of Coldplay evident as well. As on earlier releases, Nine Lashes anchor their music in Scripture-based themes of man’s fallen nature and God’s forgiving grace. “Surrender” (a luminous ballad riding an escalating groove) and “You Are the Light” (a moody, midtempo track that builds to a roaring chorus) are typical expressions of the spiritual yearning found here. The band juggle guitar crunch and rhythmic pulsation on “Break the World,” bounce to a modern dance beat on “Where I Belong,” and waltz with a metallic edge on “In the Dark.” Lead singer Jeremy Dunn projects strength and conviction throughout, whether he’s declaring his faith with a snarl (“Never Back Down”) or hitting Chris Martin–like falsetto notes while reaching for a higher power (“Cover Your Own”).

From Water to War

After hearing "Break the World", I loved the style tweek. I think a lot of the album sonds like "Write it Down" and "Get Back" from their last album. "Never Back Down" Is on par with "Anthem of the Lonely" off of "World we View". "Lights We Burn" is amazing, IMO, best song on the album. "Love Me Now" is the one of the best ballads from NL. Overall, this blows "Escape" out of the water and is almost on par with "World We View". The only song to pass up is "Cover Your Own".

Great hard rock

Crisp melodic vocals over great hard rock with a positive message. 5 stars.

Love it

This is a great album. I debated whether to buy it in the first place, based on the song previews, but it was well worth it. This is quality, genre-crossing heavy rock.
The theme of the album is obvious in every song, which is another highlight for me.
I will say, however, that probably 40% of the lyrics are "whoa" and "whoa-oh". Like, in every song. It's kind of funny.
But great album! I'll be preordering the next one.
